What is Tencel or in Another Words Lyocell?

Tencel is a trademark of newly discovered fabric, made entirely of natural materials called Lyocell? This is the only newly discovered fabric in the past 30 years. Unlike nylon and polyester, lyocell is not produced fully from synthetic polymers, but from pure wood pulp. It is sourced from wood in controlled farms and it is considered a renewable environmentally friendly material. Although the fabric is produced artificially, it is considered natural and respectively – biodegradable.

The Fabric Tencel

Tencel fabric is either made fully from lyocell, or it is combined with other materials to achieve different texture or reduce costs. Fabrics made from short tencel fibers are similar to cotton. In contrast to cotton, however, lyocell is less prone to wrinkles and shortening. Long tencel fibers make the fabric smooth and the bedroom – expensive and elegant.

Features and applications

In its pure form, lyocell is very durable and lasts long time. It can be mixed with other fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool, linen or lycra; it also can be treated to have different textures from silk to denim. The fabric does not crash, which makes it prefect for dresses and luxury bed linen sets. Thanks to its nanotechnology production process, lyocell has excellent properties to absorb moisture from the body and release it into the atmosphere, providing ideal climate for sleeping.

Disadvantages

Because the fabric has low surface temperature, the printed images do not retain well on it, which may cause rapid fading of the colors. There is also debate about the ecological properties of the fabric. Despite it comes from natural renewable sources, grown without pesticides, too much energy is used (fuel) for the wood to be transported from Africa to Europe. The production process consumes a lot of energy and the substances used to treat the fibers are extracted from petrochemicals. Although the fibers are naturally clean, it is not always the case with the materials used for dying.
